--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OUTDOOR ADVENTURE PROGRAM June 4th - June 25th or July 30th - August 20th Nowhere
in the world is it easier to be "at one with nature" than in
Costa Rica. Exploring the misty cloud forests, volcanic mountain
ranges and tropical rain forests will reveal an unmatched
biodiversity. During this two week adventure, we'll hike just
about every day, horseback ride, raft Class III-IV whitewater,
go kayak touring, snorkel, ride the zip-line through the forest
canopy and plant trees to reduce our carbon footprint while
visiting these beautiful and unique areas.
ACTIVITIES:
PROJECT OVERSEAS July 3rd - July 25th FOSTERING OUR COMMUNITY'S UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE This program is for college students with a science background, who are interested in improving science awareness among school children in Costa Rica. Students are not required to have teaching experience or expected to be perfect teachers. This is not a teacher training course...its a service learning course where students provide a much needed service, and learn a little about themselves in the process. In Costa Rica, Project Overseas students will help prepare and then present a two-week science based experience, for school children in the town of Villareal, which is located about ten minutes from Tamarindo, in the north-west Pacific Province of Guanacaste. Students have the option of staying in independent housing or they can live with local host families (homestay). Students will get the opportunity for weekend travel to other parts of Costa Rica, like Rincon de la Vieja, Monteverde and Arenal Volcano. This will provide visiting students the opportunity to sample some of the other cultural and recreational opportunities, that exist in some of other the other various regions of Costa Rica. LODGING & EXCURSIONS: During this program, students will be based in the community of Villareal, which is about a ten minute drive from Tamarindo. For the first few nights, students will plan with the local teachers in the area. The group will then move to either a private rental or live with a host family (homestay) in Villareal. Then for two weeks our group will be running the science activities in the Villareal School District. This program will also explore other regions of Costa Rica, on weekend field excursions. Activities included on the excursions are a integral part of this over- all study abroad experience. Students will learn about Costa Rican ecology, eco-tourism, sustainable agriculture and much more. We'll stay at an eco-lodge in Rincon de la Vieja for two nights over the weekend, and there we will learn about this beautiful volcano region. Students will raft the Rio Colorado, and learn about some of the conservation efforts along the river. At the conclusion of the program, students will visit the Cloud Forest Reserve in Monteverde, where students will learn about sustainable coffee methods and other local conservation efforts that are underway in this diverse region. Students will participate in Costa Rica's carbon offset program, while zip-lining above the dense jungle canopy and by visiting the San Luis waterfall, with our Costa Rican resident naturalists. The program will then wrap up at the Observatory Lodge at Arenal Volcano, with abundant activities around the volcano and lake, such as the hot springs at either Tabacon or Baldi Resorts.
