THE
MAIN QUESTIONS:
Students need to determine whether they are looking for course credit or
not, whether they want to be paid or not and whether they're looking for
a permanent position after completion of an internship or practicum. If students
want to be paid they will need to obtain a work permit, which is usually
easier to obtain if going abroad with an officially recognized work
exchange program, like that which SDPUS provides.
SDPUS
encourages all potential visiting students to become active in some of
the "volunteer service" activities that we provide. Internships can be
coordinated for students in a variety majors or fields of study.
All
students will have opportunities to learn about topics such as tropical
forest restoration and preservation. Each student will participate in a
variety of cultural activities over their seven week stay. Visiting student
interns will really get an authentic grasp of what it is like to be a
"Tico" growing up and living in Costa Rica.

ACADEMIC CREDIT:
Academic credit for
coursework can be arranged in several different ways. Students may
choose to arrange independent study credit through their home
institutions. Arrangements can also be made for course credit through
some of our participating CR universities such as: Binghamton University,
University of Georgia, Duke University, University of Costa Rica
Nacional University and Earth University.
Getting your planned
course work approved by an academic or study abroad advisor before you
go abroad is the best way to ensure that you get full academic credit
for it.
FAQ's:
Q:
What if one
of your pre-approved internships isn't available, or you change your
mind?
A:
Contact your advisor at your home university
immediately to ask for approval of a
substitution.
Q:
What
if you
didn't know in advance what internships are available?
A:
As soon as you know which internship you can
participate in, let your advisor know and request approval of the
practicum placement that you have selected.
Q:
What
if you attend a US college that approves academic internships courses
only after students return?
A:
Be sure to bring back all corresponding
information: including the itinerary, practicum syllabi, reading lists,
notes, papers, tests, and portfolios. This is a good idea for anyone
who works abroad, in case questions arise about how to evaluate your
experience or determine a grade.
