Teacher Excellence


Peter Fiorentino founded our Green Zones Project in 2007 after SDPUS started receiving hundreds of letters from school children wanting to know more on Latin America’s educational culture.  This session will be a part of a larger Teacher Excellence Awards Session in which teachers will be honored for their outstanding achievements.

 

The Green Zones Project delivers middle and high school grade curricula, which has been developed in conjunction with leading universities from both Costa Rica and abroad...by utilizing a broad consortium of professors and their current research initiatives, SDPUS provides a unique and unprecedented educational venture.

 

This is an adventure based curriculum which utilizes advanced technologies, where students learn by “joining” scientists on their missions in the differing Green Zones of Latin America. It’s named for the mythological Greek adventurer; the project offers students and teachers a distinctive opportunity to learn through exploration and discovery.

 

 
 

 

            

       

 

Study Abroad

 

As fellow educators, we know that experience is the best way for students to engage in the learning process. Costa Rica provides an ideal opportunity to open students' minds and get them excited about learning through its biodiversity, vast array of natural wonders and the diversity of its cultures.

 

Our School Trips are germane to a wide range of subjects, including Science (especially Biology, Environmental, and Earth Science), Spanish, and Social Studies.

 

The SDPUS Conference includes a unique visit to Earth University-La Flor in Liberia.   EARTH UNIVERSITY was initiated and is defined by five vital components that we have incorporated into our work and philosophy.  We hope you will consider joining our initiative:

CENTER FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF KNOWLEDGE             The main purpose is to search for ways to improve the environment, productivity and human capacities, as well as the generation of jobs through teaching and research.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL CENTER    

Deals with agricultural production (mango, sugarcane, citrus fruits, and cattle production) and creating viable learning experiences for students, producers and visitors.

SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY CENTER 

This project will manage not only academic activities, but also coordinate research with institutions that are oriented towards development and innovation.

AGRO-ECO-CULTURAL TOURISM  

The La Flor campus is utilized as a reference point for those who visit Guanacaste by offering activities that integrate ecological, agricultural, scientific and cultural criteria.

GREEN CONFERENCE CENTER  

A place where we will offer services and facilities to have business and academic activities. The center’s design reflects a “green” way of thinking.                                                     

                                                                                                    

This will be an event where interested educators attending can get first-hand experience of the type of research learning activities and programs that SDPUS and Partnerships offer within Costa Rica.  In the future we hope to implement these exciting opportunities elsewhere in the Latin American region.

The featured presenter will be Dr. John Coons, speaking on the topic of "Excellence" from his perspective as a national leader with considerable experience and leadership in higher education.

 

Dr. Coons is the most recent recipient of the SDPUS Academy of Fellows Award, given to the top leaders in international education. He is known for insightful, upbeat, and humorous presentations. He is also known to be a “teacher's teacher” when it comes to relating to his students and colleagues. Come and listen to one of the premier educators in our profession as he describes excellence as it relates to his experiences.

Keynote Speaker-Excellence Awards


 What’s the ultimate space adventure for an educator? For Franklin Chang-Diaz it was being chosen as a part of the Astronaut Candidate Class of 1980. Costa Rica’s own, Dr. Chang-Diaz will be the featured speaker at Strategic Decisions & Partnerships International Conference in a major session designed to let attendees envision what an educator/astronaut does every day, what their missions may be about, how they train, and how they hope to advance education as a result of their experiences.


This session will be a part of a larger Teacher Excellence Awards Session in which technology teachers will be honored for their outstanding achievements. Interface with the educator/astronauts during and after this session and take away a one-to-one experience with teachers who are living the ultimate space adventure.

 

We guarantee that you will walk away from this session anticipating these flights as well as being more informed about space adventures through these presenters. You may never go on a space flight of your own, but you can learn to live the adventure with them.

Project of Global Impact


Ad Astra Rocket Company, USA, Dr. Franklin Chang Diaz company,  will be the first to install a scientific laboratory in the Center of Sustainable Technology at EARTH University- La Flor.

 

Astra Rocket Company, Costa Rica, S.R.L subsidiary of Ad Astra Rocket Company, USA; will support the development of new technology to complete the first prototype of the plasma engine VX200 by the end of 2007. Its different versions will go into space    in 2010 and 2011.

 

This company will also support the implementation of other plasma technologies specifically directed towards land/ground applications, such as the disposal of toxic wastes and other relevant technologies as in solar energy and technology of materials.

 

According to Dr. Chang Díaz, “The initial designs will be the first strategic place of Costa Rican scientists and it is expected to begin on July 1st, 2007, with the support of a small group of scientists and engineers with experience in plasma systems.”
